NOTES: Coach Doug Smith continues to be one of the most resilient toughest hombres on the block. Smith battled and defeated Cancer in 2020. Cancer returned again this year in his lymph nodes and jaw forcing him to have surgery, chemo and radiation. Once again his defensive coordinator Stephen Costello will serve as the Raiders acting coach in Smith's absence. Appomattox also has two former head coaches in Richard Trent (E.C. Glass) and Andy Cox (Altavista) on the staff. Raiders have lost in the state semi-finals to Graham in back-to-back seasons. Raiders won the championship in 2015, 2016, 2017, 2019, and 2020. If you combine the two championships from Graham in 2018 and 2022, then either Appomattox or Graham has won every Class 2 title since 2015 interrupted only by King William's 2021 title.

NOTES: Devlin comes to Chatham from an assistant coaching position at Division III Averett University, but has a wealth of head coaching experience. Devlin was the coach at Princeton Day School in New Jersey from 1998-2009 winning 2 state championships. NOTES: Not much to love in Lovingston last season. Baker has been well traveled going from an Assistant job at VMI, to Alleghany to Rustburg to Parry McCluer to Nelson County. He took the job at Nelson County due to an easier commute from his home in Rustburg. Rebuilding this program is anything but easy. Nelson County is 26-120 since 2008; their last winning season was in 2002. The Governors were 5-5 in 2007 and 4-6 in 2019.
